How to make a hood

Manufacturers of household appliances offer a wide range of hoods of various types and models. If for some reason the existing assortment does not suit you, then you can do the hood yourself.

Making a hood in the kitchen with your own hands

There is nothing wrong with assembling this device yourself. After all, all modern manufacturers once started with piece copies. If standard models are not suitable for your kitchen or you want something unique, then assembling your own design is not at all difficult.

Active hood

This is the name of the device designed to remove contaminated air from the kitchen to the ventilation. The operating mechanism here is a fan, which draws in smoke and smoke and drives it into the exhaust outlet. The device is quite noisy and energy-intensive, but assembling it yourself is not at all difficult.

You will need:

  • Any non-combustible material for the box (tin, dense foil, drywall);
  • Aluminum or metal profile for the frame;
  • Fan and motor to it;
  • Check valve;
  • Corrugated pipe (if the ventilation hole in the house does not coincide with the location of the box);
  • Fasteners and tools.

Assembling an active type hood is straightforward. Here are its main stages:

  1. We mark the size and shape of the future structure and its location on the wall.
  2. From the profile we assemble the frame of the lower part, the sides and the frame of the upper part.
  3. We attach the finished "skeleton" to the wall and see if it looks good, does it interfere, does it fit into the general concept of the interior. At this stage, it is easy to make any changes to the design, which with a finished frame will make it more difficult.
  4. If all the changes are taken into account, you can proceed to the skin of the frame with non-combustible material. The result is a ventilation duct - the basis of a future hood.
  5. The most crucial moment is the installation of a fan. Several options are possible here. A large unit is best installed on spacers inside the bell of the ventilation duct. It should not stand close to a narrow part so as not to block the air flow. A small fan can be placed inside the pipe.
  6. We place the finished box on the wall. If necessary, we connect the top of the frame with ventilation in the house using the corrugation. Do not forget about the reverse valve, otherwise all smells from the neighbors will be drawn from the hood.
  7. We check the operability of the device.
  8. We proceed to the design and decoration of the outer box.

As you can see, it is not at all difficult to assemble a hood of the active type on your own. Any material at hand and repair residues are suitable for this.

Passive exhaust hood

A device of this design is somewhat more complicated than an active one. You can make it yourself if you still have an inoperative old hood. The principle of operation of the device is similar to a vacuum cleaner: special filters clean the air of dust, grease and smoke and return it back to the kitchen. Such a hood does not need access to ventilation, since air does not leave the room.

To build, you will need:

  • Grease filters from the old hood.
  • Profiles for the frame.
  • Material for casing.
  • A small exhaust fan.
  • Fasteners.

The assembly of the case is the same as in the previous model, except for the following:

  1. It is not necessary to make a hole to connect the socket with ventilation in the house;
  2. Slots will be required in the upper part of the duct for the release of purified air;
  3. The fan is placed between two layers of filters - grease inlet and carbon inlet.

In the rest, the design of the passive device takes place according to a similar scheme.

Production of drywall extracts

The most popular building material for creating designer hoods is drywall. He is endowed with such important advantages:

  • It does not burn and does not melt under the influence of high temperatures;
  • Easy to work, allows you to cut out fragments of any shape;
  • Easy to install - mounted on any base and does not give a large load on the frame;
  • Decorated and painted, glued and plastered, revealing complete freedom of action for the designer.

Drywall boxes can be turned into a chimney pipe lined with artificial stone, and into a strict cube in the style of minimalism, and into a painted romantic element of Provence.

Plywood

Plywood box in the kitchen is also appropriate. This material is inexpensive, safe for human health and easily cut and mounted on the frame. But it is worth paying attention to fire safety.

IMPORTANT! The plywood hood should be as high as possible from the plate, and it should be glued inside with metal or foil. Refractory impregnations will also be useful.

It is also worth considering the special echo of this material. So that cooking is not accompanied by the sounds of a take-off fighter, the inner surface of the box should be sheathed with sound-absorbing material. Non-combustible mineral wool is ideal for this.

Other options

From which to create your own, unique design, you decide. You can lay out the hood even of brick or wild stone, resting on the floors, to fully simulate a stove or fireplace. And you can create a chromed metal structure in the style of hi-tech or avant-garde. The main thing to remember is compliance with fire safety requirements. Covering the frame with plastic or MDF is not the best option. Not only are these materials extremely combustible, but plastic also releases a whole bunch of toxic substances when heated.

Tips & Tricks

Whatever model you choose, it is worth observing a few simple rules:

  1. Design design should not be built at the expense of performance. After all, the main purpose of the device is to clean the air in the kitchen from burning, child and unpleasant odors.
  2. The external and internal surfaces should be covered with easily washable paints. So it will be easier to clear splashes of fat or broth.
  3. Take care of sound insulation so that the fan does not interfere with you or your neighbors.
  4. When connecting to the network, the same electrical safety rules must be observed as when installing the magazine device.
  5. The area of the retracting surface should cover the entire area of the plate so that grease, steam and unpleasant odors are completely eliminated.

A hood, created by yourself, not only saves the budget, but also allows you to decorate the kitchen with a unique design, created in a single copy.
